Epiphany Staff

Biography

I am Sister Larraine Lauter, and I have been in ministry in some capacity at Epiphany since November 2006. From that date through August 2008, my part-time ministry was primarily focused on enabling the parish become fully inclusive of new Spanish speaking members. During that time I had the opportunity to put down roots as a member of our community, and so it was as a member who loves Epiphany that I decided to apply for my current full-time position, as Minister for Social Responsibility. In leading that ministry, I remember the words we sing in Psalm 85: “Kindness and truth shall meet, justice and peace shall embrace…” These words for me evoke a dance of relationship between four values, a dance into which we are all invited for the sake of the Reign of God. I imagine Kindness and Truth as dancing partners who teach us the steps of compassion and solidarity with others. Justice and Peace are partners who lead us into right relationship and action, so as to nurture the Reign of God in our time. The four come together in complementary ways, so that our works of mercy are always balanced by our works of justice. All of our social responsibility ministries can be situated in the inter-relationship between these four personified values. With them, we step out into four sacred directions, always turning back into the heart of an integrated ministry. I have been in ministry as an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph for over 25 years. My ten years of teaching experience with my bachelor’s degree in education and fine arts. My master’s degree in theology is from St. Meinrad School of Theology, where I was in the first class of women who studied with the seminarians. That formation has supported me in 17 years of parish ministry and non-profit leadership. My previous parish ministry has included liturgy/music, social responsibility and pastoral care. But when I look to the roots of my passion for all issues of justice, I find them in the spiritual formation I received as a child and young adult, when I was challenged by my parents and teachers to love and respond to the wounds of each person and all creation.
