Social Responsibility, as it has been defined at Epiphany, represents this community's commitment to reach out to the larger world. The many ministries listed under Social Responsibility express the Gospel concern to love all persons, especially those who suffer from oppression, deprivation, or violence.

Letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
The suffering of the Haitian people continues to touch our hearts. We still receive contributions that will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services for the immediate alleviation of that suffering...but in the aftermath, we begin to question. Why have these people been so crushed by poverty? What will really make a difference in their future? For a thought-provoking response, consider this letter written on behalf of the US Catholic Bishops, addressed to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other officials. It calls for a systemic change through debt relief, trade preferences and other means of international assistance. We’ll be watching for other responses that could help us to deepen our understanding of the causes of poverty in Haiti and beyond.

Lord, at times such as this,
when we realize that the ground beneath our feet is not as solid as we had imagined,
we plead for your mercy.
As the things we have built crumble about us,
we know too well how small we truly are
on this ever changing, ever moving, fragile planet we call home.
Yet you have promised never to forget us.
Do not forget us now.
Today, so many people are afraid.
They wait in fear of the next tremor.
They hear the cries of the injured amid the rubble.
They roam the streets in shock at what they see.
And they fill the dusty air with wails of grief and the names of missing dead.

As of Thursday, January 21, our parish members have contributed over $19,000 in donated funds for earthquake relief. What a flood of generosity--possibly the largest Epiphany special collection for emergency relief ever. These funds are being channeled through Louisville Catholic Charities to Catholic Relief Services, which has pledged that 100% of these collections will go to direct relief.
CRS sends out frequent reports on their activity in Haiti. These reports are quite moving, especially in their description of CRS staffers themselves living and working outside, yet managing to do effective emergency relief. Here is the report for Thursday morning (January 21, 2010):

January 25 Potato Supper: A Heart for Mission However we name them, our pilgrimages to “the other side” are profound experiences. Kassie Eberle has recently returned from Africa and would love to share her experience with us. We have a wealth of community members as well who have been to Honduras, Appalachia, Portland and Guatemala during 2009. This month, we invite all who have been “on pilgrimage” to come together at our Potato Supper, along with anyone who is interested! We’ll hear a talk from Kassie, and have a chance to reflect together on the impact of our pilgrimages. The Potato Supper begins at 6:30 pm. Please sign up in the Gathering Area, or call the parish office, so we can reserve your potato!

Besides our special collection this weekend, we invite you to consider an appeal for medical supplies. Hand in Hand Ministries, one of our local mission organizations with whom we often partner, has put out a call for medical supplies to fill a 40 foot cargo container to go to Haiti through Supplies Over Seas (SOS). These supplies must be new and unopened--not leftovers from first aid boxes, or old prescriptions, etc. For a list of what can be accepted, please click here: Haiti Relief Items. If you can donate, please call Bill Roof at 502-736-6360, or bring items to Epiphany this weekend (January 16-17, 2010).

What: A Story of Ultimate Forgiveness
When: Sunday, January 17, 2010, 1:30pm
Where: Epiphany Community Center
The Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and Church of Epiphany are partnering to share a story of ultimate forgiveness. Vicki Schieber of the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty will speak at 1:30 pm on Sunday, Jan. 17 at Epiphany’s Community Center.
Vicki’s daughter, Shannon, was raped and murdered in 1998 while finishing her first year of graduate school on a full scholarship at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Her killer was not arrested until 2002. He is serving several life sentences without parole in Colorado and Pennsylvania not only for Shannon’s rape and murder but for 13 other sexual assaults as well.
