Honduras Aug 2011Greetings to all our family, friends and supporters! Finally, a few photos, which you can access through this link: Honduras August 2011.

We had a great day yesterday, with many adventurous challenges. The home construction is the most difficult we've ever attempted, but progress is being made in spite of tight space, steep elevations, and long distances to carry the materials. Our first round of water training (30 women) went very well, and those team members who are planning to start water programs (Haiti, Sudan) are gaining a lot of experience. I lost track of how many children, but we have a great team of child entertainers!

Report from Honduras – August 8, 2011

Christo statueGood morning to all our family, friends and supporters! It looks to be another beautiful day here in Honduras. We’ve enjoyed pleasantly cool weather (never higher than 80ish) and much cooler nights, and last night was especially comfortable. We turned in fairly early after a long day that involved a lot of traveling back and forth.

We began with our traditional Sunday morning excursion to Cristo de Picacho, a five-story statue of Christ standing above the city on the mountain of Picacho, surrounded by gardens and natural beauty. This is the site of our Sunday morning group prayer, concluding with a blessing for the 1.4 million people of the city below.

From Picacho we headed back to the other side of the city and up the mountain to Divina Misericordia, arriving in time for liturgy with our friends. It was the first time this week that we’ve had a chance to meet with Fr. Elmer, who looks good though tired—he pastors 8 different communities, and had 4 or 5 masses ahead in his day. Liturgy was, as always, celebrated with great enthusiasm and many hugs—the usual 10 minute sign of peace!

August Honduras Visitation has begun!

Honduras MissionPlease pray for our visitation team and the Divine Mercy community as we deepen our relationship through shared prayer, reflection and service.

Our service includes water filtration program, children’s enrichment activities, home construction. We’ll also be checking in with the micro-enterprise and scholarship recipients. Along with frequent prayer and liturgy, we will conclude next Saturday with a shared retreat day.

The next visitation dates will be March 9-18, 2012, to coincide with college spring breaks.

Honduras MapGreetings to all our Honduras team supporters!

As you may have guessed, internet access has had its challenges, hence the gap in daily messages. A lot of that has to do with the busy-ness of our days, during the optimum times to share the access—hence this 5:30 am message! We’ve been having very full and productive days, thanks to the great attitudes on this team, and the beautiful leadership of our friends here in Honduras.

The “Zoeller Advance Team” has had great success in establishing a mission in Valle Amarateca. The leadership there, consisting of Pastora Margarita, Doctora Ana and her husband John, as well as several new “water women”, has proven to be very positive. 29 women and 1 gentleman have been trained in the Water With Blessings program, under the leadership of Lilian (one of our first trainers, see her photo in the Louisville Record article!) and Ayde, both of the Divine Mercy Community.

Honduras Visitation is planned for August 5-14, 2011

Honduras MissionWe’re still in need of a pediatric nurse to do well-child checkups and help collect supporting data for the water purification project. Other skills are welcome as well—Spanish ability is not necessary—and the cost might be lower than you think! Please contact Sister Larraine if you are interested.

Needed for Honduras: children’s craft items, non-prescription reading and sun glasses, rosaries and other small religious items, children’s books (bilingual, Spanish or English, soft cover preferred), Epiphany t-shirts (purchase to send), new makeup or lotion samples, toothbrushes/toothpaste.

Please call Sister Larraine or Kathy Thistleton (339-1137) if you can help, or label items and leave them on the back porch.

Good News from Honduras!

Honduras Mission LogoGood News from Honduras! We have received a report for the new microenterprise program: 12 women, starting with microloans of about $50 US, have begun a variety of small businesses: tamales, curtains, sandals, make-up, produce, etc.

Please say a prayer in support of these women and their courage. Most of them have a sixth grade education or less, but they are determined to find ways to better the lives of their children.  Several of them have started back to school on weekends.

Our next Honduras Visitation will be August 4-13, 2011.  We will continue expanding the water purification program, well-child checkups, and hope to begin a container gardening project as well.

If you are interested in being on the team, please contact Sister Larraine.

Honduras Solidarity Team to meet on Monday, April 18, 2011

Honduras TeamThe Honduras Solidarity Team meets on Monday, April 18, 2011, 7:00 PM in the Library. We’ll begin with special time in Holy Week prayer with our friends in Honduras, and do some project planning—new ideas in the works! Our friends have asked us to help them learn container gardening as a way to supplement their diet with fresh produce, and to build "rocket stoves": high-efficiency wood burning stoves that will improve their use of wood for cooking. We are also working with friends to offer our water program to mission teams throughout the world. The needs of the scholarship families and the after school program have an exciting possibility: some of our youth plan to raise funds as they climb Kilimanjaro in June. We have pictures to share of the home construction progress, and a great report on the first steps in the micro-credit organization. All in all, it should be an interesting meeting!

A Photo Journal from our Mission to Honduras

The Following pictures have been sent by Sr. Larraine from the Mission to Honduras, during the week of February 28-March 12, 2011.

Greetings from Honduras!

HOnduras GlobeThis letter was received from Sr. Larraine upon her arrival in Honduras.

Mike Fitzgerald and I arrived on Saturday to join the Methodist medical clinic team. We aren't the only Catholics--there is a sizable contingent from the Frankfort area. There are 30 of us, working at the Methodist Church that is a few blocks higher in the neighborhood than our Divine Mercy Catholic Church. Today we saw 340 patients--a record for our team. The economy has worsened considerably here, especially affecting the price of food. At this level of poverty, folks chose between medical care and food--so the demand for (almost) free medical care has increased nearly 50% from our previous patient load. The crowd waiting at the gate was far more desperate and difficult to control than I've ever seen.
