Family/Children's Formation

Parish Family Formation is a program involving all age levels. The belief is that religious education is a life-long, on-going process. We witness to God in such a way that children as well as adults can grasp the central place of faith in their lives.

The Cross at Hurstbourne Christian Church

This story was submitted by Mark Derridinger

Cross at Hursbourne Christian ChurchBeautiful relationships develop over time in part due to a sense of reciprocity, respect and love. Such a relationship has grown over the years between Epiphany and Hurstbourne Christian Church. Pastors Jim Flynn of Epiphany and Bill Schiphorst of Hurstbourne Christian became friends in 1975 due to a shared interest in current social issues. A friendship quickly developed between the two, as well as the two churches.

When Fr. Joe Graffis became pastor of Epiphany in 1981, he brought with him a great passion for ecumenism and continued the warm relationship with Bill and Hurstbourne Christian. Epiphany began to plan the building of a prayer garden just outside the chapel in our Worship Center and was honored to receive a monetary contribution from the people of Hurstbourne Christian toward its construction. In the same loving spirit, Fr. Joe Graffis donated a portion of the faceted glass for an entryway at Hurstbourne Christian when they were in the process of construction.

Beacon of Hope: Capital Campaign Project for Children

LighthouseLast June many of us made a commitment to our Capital Campaign – “Building A Future of Hope.” This campaign enables the many ministries at Epiphany to continue and to grow, as well as assisting the ability to create better space. Family/Children’s Formation involved the youngest members of Epiphany with brief lessons in their Formation classes on the concept of stewardship. The children were helped to understand that each of us, as we offer the gifts or talents with which we have been blessed, become an even more important part of the whole parish family.

The children of Epiphany now have the opportunity to share their treasure toward the “Building A Future of Hope Campaign” by participating in a project called, “Beacon of Hope.” The monies gathered by our children will be used in a creative way as a part of our new addition. Materials and information are available in the Gathering Area to create a “lighthouse” to serve as a reminder as well as hold any contributions, which children will be invited to bring in once a month. This project will coincide with our Formation year and will run from October 2010 through April 2011.

What: Bibletimes Marketplace (Ecumenical Vacation Bible School)
When: July 12 – 16, 2010
Where: Epiphany Grounds and Buildings
Theme: “Voices in Exile”

BibletimesAt Epiphany, our Vacation Bible School is known as “Bibletimes Marketplace.” Children (and adults) from Epiphany, Anchorage Presbyterian, and St. Luke’s Episcopal will gather during this week in July to meet with old friends, and make new ones. It is a life-giving, educational experience which inspires and transforms young and old alike.

Bibletimes Marketplace is a carefully thought-out curriculum of six cycles taught in sequence for six summers. This year, we are in cycle “D”, titled, Voices In Exile – “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song!” We learn about the Israelites and the Babylonian exile. We are introduced to Ezekiel, a special person known as a “new prophet.” We talk about Jonah and his interesting travels to Nineveh, as well as Job and his incredible trials. We also learn about Daniel who was chosen to live in a palace, and about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and their miracle in the fiery furnace. Finally, we learn about brave Esther, who helped save the lives of many Jews.

First Grade donates gifts and Quilt to EACM

First Grade QuiltOn January 31, 2010 the First Grade Formation class celebrated a baby shower complete with games, cards, gifts, cake and punch. The celebration is an annual service project by the first graders to collect much needed diapers and baby wipes for various organizations. This year's collection will be donated to EACM .

As part of the morning's fun, games are played to guess if the baby will be a boy or girl and then to develop a truly stunning, and alphabetical, name for the little one. A quilt block is designed and drawn by each child. The blocks are sewn together to make a cozy quilt for the new baby.

The quilt, along with the diapers, wipes and lots of handmade greeting cards will be donated to EACM the first week of March.
