Workshop Agenda and Logistics

Saturday, August 13, 2011 -- 9am-noon

The theme of the workshop is information sharing: what works for your organization? What doesn't work?  How can others learn from your experiences?

A few logistics items:

Boy Scout Troop 71 enables wifi in the Lighthouse

Burying the conduitDue to electrical storms repeatedly striking underground cabling and shorting out networking equipment in both Epiphany House and the Epiphany youth center (a.k.a. the Lighthouse), there has been no internet connectivity in the Lighthouse for about a year.

But thanks to an Eagle boy scout project from Troop 71 (the troop that meets in the Lighthouse), new fiber optic cable -- that is not susceptible to lightning strikes -- is now in place between Epiphany House and the Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse now has wifi internect connectivity again!  Woo hoo!

Many months ago, Daniel Scrivener, one of the scouts from Troop 71, chose as his Eagle project to restore the networking to the Lighthouse.  The first, and perhaps most important, step was to restore the "backbone" connectivity between the main Epiphany LAN in the Epiphany House administration building and the Lighthouse.  Restoring this connectivity was the bulk of Daniel's project; once the LAN was connected to the Lighthouse, the Epiphany Tech Committee could easily restore the Lighthouse's wifi access.

[ download printable flyer ]

  • Do you support information technology (IT) for an Archdiocese of Louisville parish or school?
  • Have you implemented any IT solutions that others would benefit from knowing about?
  • Do you face constrained resources (people, money, time) that hinder getting the job done?
  • Do you want to meet and discuss common IT issues with your fellow ArchLou organizations?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then you should attend the ArchLou IT Information Sharing Workshop on Saturday, August 13, 2011, from 9am-noon!  There is no cost to attend.

An optional free lunch will follow the workshop for further discussion, Q&A, and general networking.

Epiphany's Email Lists

Epiphany has many different email lists, most of which are for a specific committee / purpose.

The general "parishioner" list is open to all parishioners, and is used to broadcast information to the entire parish.

You can sign up on the parishioner list here, or login to see all the mailing lists that are available (you might need to create an account first).

Epiphany Computer Upgrades

Laptop clipartHave you seen a laptop-toting Epiphany staff member walking around with a smile on their face recently? That’s because the Technology Committee just recently completed a sorely-needed upgrade of Epiphany staff computers. The old machines were a mish-mash of different desktops and laptops that had been bought over the past five years (and remember, 5 human years = 87 computer years!).

Balancing technology needs and stewardship responsibility, the Tech Committee spent months evaluating, testing, and finally purchasing upgraded computers for the Epiphany staff. The upgrade was carefully planned to coincide with the end of July in order to utilize the remaining IT budget from 2009 and some of the IT budget from 2010.

Using Google Docs at Epiphany

Google Docs logoEpiphany uses many of Google's services for its day-to-day business.  For example, it is quite common for an Epiphany staff member or committee to use the Google Docs service to share and collaborate on documents across a group of people.  Google Docs works well for the community of Epiphany because it is free, there is no software to install, and it works on any computer that is connected to the internet.

Google provides a good short overview tutorial of Google Docs.

In order to use Google Docs with Epiphany staff members and committees, you must have a Google Account.  There are two kinds of Google Accounts:
