Each year we start the season of Lent with a curious practice of having our foreheads marked with ashes in the sign of a cross. Ashes represent the total destruction of anything that is burned up by fire. It is the carbon that is left from such full and complete destruction. It is a substance that seems totally lifeless. Ancient people used this symbol by throwing dust or ashes upon themselves when confronted with devastating news like the death of a loved one. It symbolized their interior feelings of hopelessness when confronting  death.  Another symbolic action was the tearing of their garments. Ancient people usually only owned one or two sets of clothing, so such an action was also very devastating.

Reflections on Sunday’s Readings: February 10, 2013

Jesus in the boatThis is the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Imagine the fish story Simon, James and John told about the day Jesus told them to again lower their nets. I wonder what they told first – the story of their amazing fish catch or the teachings of Jesus that astounded them. Imagine how their lives were turned up-side-down because of their connection with this itinerate preacher, this Son of God.

What Jesus stories do we tell? “We do not have any miraculous fish story to tell,” you say. True. But we have even greater signs and wonders to share. After all, we who are descendants in faith of the Peter, James and John, have received amazing teachings. We are invited to share with these three and others an intimate relationship with Jesus the Christ. Even more, we are offered Jesus himself every time we participate in an Eucharistic liturgy – whether Mass or a Communion service. We too are changed after such an encounter. The question to ask ourselves is: How have our lives reflected the amazing presence of Jesus in our midst?

Share the Light – Reflections on Advent and Christmas 2012

Share the LightThe following reflections were submitted by parishioners as part of their spiritual practices for Advent.  We will publish one reflection a day for the rest of January.

I am “running” into the word HOPE pretty frequently these Advent days in what I read and what I hear. It is “something” I need in my life these days because of the many situations in life that could lead me to “despair”.

No poems or songs. But the joy of watching the three Latino children and their families tonight as they made their First Communion was wonderful and a light for me showing how much Jesus is present in their lives and mine.

Reflections on Sunday’s Readings: February 3, 2013

HeartThis is the Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time. We are called to speak the message of God in love- and God will strengthen and protect us as we do. God knows us! And God’s love never falters – no matter what! How do we respond in the face of such unending love? By passing on God’s amazing message of unfailing love. However, accepting God's call may mean confronting those who do not live according to the ways of truth and justice. Jeremiah discovered this, so did Jesus.

Readings for this Sunday:

  • Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19. I formed you in the womb; do not be afraid. You are to speak my word; I will give you what you need.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13. Love is the only measure of lasting value, and it will never fail. This reading tells us how to pass on God’s gift of love.
  • Luke 4:21-30. Jesus speaks of bringing glad tidings of freedom for captives and the oppressed, yet these words challenge those who knew him from childhood, and they reject that “these words have been fulfilled in your hearing.” They could not accept his wisdom -- but Jesus was not sent only for his own town.

Advent Morning Offering

The exit boasts no superior coffee, only
A humble Waffle House, to be gained by a
Dauntingly rutted access road: a pitted lot
and cheap cheer in red and silver tinsel.

Come in, Love
And sit wherever you want, whatlitbe?

A smile sweet and free.

A group of us were praying in silence on the stairs of the Cathedral about a month ago and a woman walked up, pulling a fully packed suitcase along behind her.  The woman stopped, looked us over, and said, "I'm a prayer warrior, too.  What's happening?"  I stepped from the group and shared our prayer intentions briefly with her.
