What a fantastic Friday! We ran out of eyeglass patients at Divine Mercy and moved our clinic to St. Maximiliano Kolbe parish and set up shop. Friar Isidoro announced at church last night that we would be in his parish next to the Monastery today and 150 people showed up!!! What a glorious day!! The unofficial total fittings for eyeglasses this week was 450!

One young lady went from reading 20/100 in both eyes to 20/30 with her new eyeglass prescription! This will change her life! We also celebrated with a gift of a St. Patrick’s Day necklace for our 400th person to receive a pair of glasses!! We are thrilled to have surpassed our goal! We reached 480 clients!

Reflections on Sunday’s Readings: March 24, 2013

Palm SundayThis is Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. As Jesus rode along, the people were spreading their cloaks on the road... Imagine people doing that in a time when they had very little clothing! Every piece was made by hand and each cloak was precious. For the poor, it may well have been the only cloak they possessed; often their protection against the elements. Yet at this first procession honoring Jesus with palm branches, these very people did not hold on to their most needed possession, but threw down their cloaks before a donkey's feet to give homage to Christ!

What do you hold on to? What have you not yet 'let go of' this Lent? Is it material stuff? Financial security? Unforgiveness? A grudge? What do you need to 'throw down' to honor Jesus this Holy Week? Jesus will let go of everything, including His cloak, for you and me on the Cross. Can we do any less? And can we follow him on that path through suffering and death to resurrection life?

Holy Thursday, March 28:

Liturgy of the Lord’s Supper 7:00 PM Celebrate Eucharist and Foot-Washing -- come have your feet washed and wash others’, and bring bread or other food for the hungry. At the conclusion there will be time for prayer in the Chapel of Reservation.

Obituary for Doris Toth, Charter Epiphany Member

DorisDoris Toth, 94, of Louisville, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Jefferson Manor.

She was a graduate of the Southern Connecticut State University, a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran, a member of Epiphany choir, Bell choir and Epiphany Sages, volunteered for Maryhurst and recorded books for the blind. Doris retired from GE, a computer analyst for over 35 year.

She is survived by niece, Joyce Edgars of Meriden, CT; nephews, Jeffrey Crooks of Green Valley, AZ, and Jarrett Crooks of Trumbull, CT; and many great-nieces and nephews, including Lori Starr recently of Louisville.

Her funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Monday March 18, 2013 at Church of the Epiphany, 914 Old Harrods Creek Rd., with private burial in Kentucky Veterans Central Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Arrangements through Ratterman's 12900 Shelbyville Rd. East Louisville.

The Spring Equinox is March 20. Do you know what this has to do with Easter? The date of Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring Equinox. That’s why it changes every year. Explain this to your child and you’ll probably sound pretty smart.

Report from Honduras

ArrivalThis is a report from our mission team visiting the Divine Mercy parish in Honduras.

Day 1

Landing in Tegucigalpa was memorable as always. We are here and it has been a long day. Got here on time and that landing was a Lou Lou. We didn't have one of those the last time, but have heard about them. It was wild. After a great lunch, visited Divine Mercy where we dropped our things, and then went shopping for supplies. Now putting together our "cells," and preparing for a fantastic Mission.

Greg Tichenor Honored

Greg TichenorThe 26th annual African American Catholic Leadership Awards Banquet paid homage to both its past and its future during the March 2, 2013 event at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel. The banquet, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry (OMM), presented its highest honor — the 2013 Acacia Award — to St. Joseph Society of the Sacred Heart Bishop John H. Ricard and to Church of the Epiphany parishioner Greg Tichenor.

The Acacia Award presented to Greg Tichenor speaks to the OMM’s continuing efforts to bridge racial, economic and social gaps between residents of the local community. Tichenor has been active in tutoring children at the Catholic Enrichment Center on West Broadway and has been a part of programs such as “Moving Toward Oneness,” “Crossing the Social Divide,” and “Undoing Racism.”

Reflections on Sunday’s Readings: March 17, 2013

Lenten JourneyThis is the Fifth Sunday of Lent. As we continue our Lenten journey, we are reminded again and again of God’s great mercy, and the ways Jesus frees people from the “death” of their own sinful actions and offers to those who would remain with him new life. Our Lenten readings remind us that we all sin, we all “miss the mark” – and we’re all called to repentance and conversion of hearts and lives. Though the Scribes and Pharisees wished to make an example of the adulterous woman as a grave sinner deserving of death, Jesus exposes the truth that we are all sinners –and that everything can change. Though we sin, Jesus only wants new life for us. Who do we feel justified in condemning? What truth do we need to recognize about another, about ourselves? Do I take opportunities to encounter Christ, to allow myself to see the truth and take the steps needed to change?

Readings for this Sunday:

  • Is 43: 16-21. See, I am doing a brand new thing. You must search to see it and understand it.
  • Phil 3: 8-14. All else is rubbish compared to the wealth in Christ.
  • Jn 8: 1-11. Nor do I condemn you. Go and avoid sin.

Why does our seating arrangement in the Worship Center often change?

  • We are on a faith journey and “the road” often turns and twists.

One question concerned the number of lights on during liturgies.

  • More lights are used to provide even lighting and are used at 50-60% to extend light bulb life.
