Catholics at the Capitol: Exercising Faithful Citizenship

logoComing Soon: A JustCommunity season focused on our Catholic social teaching and legislative advocacy.

We’re sometimes asked, “Isn’t it wrong for the Church to be politically involved?”

The truth has two answers: we may not and do not engage in advocacy on behalf of a candidate for political office.  But we may and do engage in advocacy for the poor and vulnerable, for peace and justice, through legislative action... Are you interested?

At the Capitol

That means we talk with our legislators, go to hearings, write letters, make phone calls—all in the attempt to bring about a more just society. In fact, our bishops promote this kind of advocacy as “faithful citizenship.”

Here at Epiphany, we collaborate with all sorts of action calls from the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, the US Catholic Bishops, under the guidance of Louisville Catholic Charities. The issues range across the spectrum: the right to life of all human beings, care of the environment, international relief, fair lending practices, voting rights, just immigration policy.

If you can, mark your calendar and plan to join us for Catholics at the Capitol, February 6 & 7, 2012. (Monday and Tuesday). We’ll be joining Catholics from across the state for inspiration, training and political engagement with Kentucky legislators during the 2012 session.
