By Judy Webber

Now that the weather has become co-operative, the improved landscaping in front of Epiphany House is nearing completion. Martha Stuber, Business Manager, advises that Betsy Smith, parishioner and landscape architect, provided the design. Bob Overberg and the staff maintenance crew of Ray Hilbert and Bob Clickner have done much of the work.

The two large black urns that were in the middle of the grassy circle have been moved closer to the house to accentuate the entry way. The existing trees remain on each side of the porch proper.

Epiphany HouseYou will find varied plantings of viburnum, hydrangea, dwarf fothergilla, Henry’s Garnet Virginia, Nikko slender Deutzia, and two varieties of medium grasses between the house and the front sidewalk.

The circular plot holds Natchez crepe myrtles and ground cover of white Mazus. These will complement the plantings in the urns.

In spring, there will be the completion of the project with a perennial border being placed partially along the circular driveway area between the urns and the crepe myrtles. Eileen Schweinhart, who has cared for Epiphany’s perennials for more than 20 years, is already planning and selecting plants for these perennial beds.

Epiphany HouseTake time now to stroll over and look at the area. It is well manicured. Given time to acclimate and grow, the shrubs are sure to be a treat to the senses with the nuances of fragrance and colors varying from delicate whites and pinks to burgundy, greens and reds to yellow. Textures in the grasses will provide added visual interest with their white edging and wheat colored seed heads.

There is a memorial bench close to the children’s swings. One might call it the perfect spot to sit and take in the beautiful grounds.
