Junk Drop-Off Day October 25

The City of Louisville's free, semi-annual junk drop-off day will be held Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the Waste Management Outer Loop Landfill, 2673 Outer Loop.

More than 410 tons of junk were collected the last time this service was offered in July.

The idea of the program is to allow residents to get rid of bulky items not accepted by regular garbage collection, such as appliances, furniture and mattresses. Residents are asked to separate metal items from other junk because the metal is recycled and saves landfill space.

“This partnership allows our residents to dispose of unwanted junk and clutter in an appropriate and responsible way,” Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson said in a statement.

Unacceptable items include yard waste, hazardous materials, paint, tires and commercial trash.
Materials such as oil, lead-based paints, lawn fertilizers, batteries and household chemicals can be disposed of at the city’s Household Hazardous Materials Collection Center, at 7501 Grade Lane. The center is free and open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Abramson also said volunteers are needed for a community-wide cleanup, sponsored by Brightside, on Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. until noon.Groups can register for the cleanup at www.brightsideinc.org, or by calling MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000.

Brightside will provide T-shirts, bags and gloves and coordinate trash collection with the Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management Services. Individuals can call and be placed with an established group.

The cleanup is sponsored by the UPS Foundation, Kentucky PRIDE Fund, and individual donors.
