Reflections on Sunday’s Mass: December 20, 2009
This week is the Fourth Sunday of Advent (the last Sunday befor Christmas). We continue looking ever more deeply for the presence of God. Mary and Elizabeth in our gospel are examples of trust and faithfulness to God. In the first reading we hear God’s promise of a new ruler who will “stand firm and shepherd the flock, by the strength of God,” and that this Chosen One “will be peace.” What would it look like here and now to “stand firm and shepherd by the strength of God?” As Christ’s body, we continue the incarnation here and now. How can we, too, BE peace? Who comes to mind as a peace maker in your family, work place, church or world community?
- Micah 5:1-4a. Bethlehem, birthplace of the Shepherd-King, David, will be the birthplace of the Messiah. The Messiah will stand firm in the strength of God, shepherd the people – and shall be peace.
- Psalm of the Day: Ps (79) 80. Remembering God’s great deeds in the past, the psalmist pleads for God to intervene once more to save “the vine” that is the chosen people.
- Hebrews 10:5-10. The “new” covenant is based in fidelity to God’s will under all circumstances.
- Luke 1:39-45. Mary and Elizabeth are both examples of doing God’s will, and are the images of promises fulfilled. Happy are the ones who trust that God would do what was promised. Think about those you have experienced as peace makers. Who comes to mind as a peace maker in your family, work place, church or world community? Is there a person you have met that you consider to “be” peace?
