Social Responsibility - Ministry Overview

Kindness and Truth shall meet, Justice and Peace shall embrace
Psalm 85 gives us a poetic framework for an integrated image of our ministry and its many expressions. We speak of Kindness, Truth, Justice and Peace as four virtues of social responsibility that lead us in a “dance”. They guide us in the lively steps and movements of a Gospel response to our world.

Kindness leads us into expressions of compassion…

Support of Direct Assistance Agencies: We tithe a portion of our income to support care for needy and vulnerable people through a number of local and global agencies, including a variety of collaborative direct assistance ministries and community centers across Louisville.

Emergency Assistance: A portion of our tithe is set aside for people who come directly to us for help with housing and utility bills.

We have volunteers in and support a variety of local programs, including Kid’s Café, St. Vincent de Paul Helping Hands Kitchen, Dare to Care Food Bank, Eastern Area Community Ministries, Sister Visitor Center, AIM (AIDS Interfaith Ministries), Latino Outreach Services and similar services for immigrants.

We support and volunteer in programs that serve the most vulnerable of God’s children, such as: the Pregnancy Resource Center, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Pitt Academy, Exceptional Equitation, Exploited Children’s Help Organization, Family Scholar House, Guardia Care, House of Ruth.

The Truth of our shared membership in the Family of God leads us to express our solidarity through…

Mission Trips to work with friends in Honduras and Appalachia (with Hand in Hand Ministries).
Development Assistance with special projects such as Holy Name Daycare.
Volunteer Teams in various programs at the Churchill Downs Backside Chapel, Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, Jefferson County Jail, Prisoner Visitation Support.
Our work with Habitat and similar home rehab work, enabling us to work side by side with our neighbors who dream of better housing for their families.
Support of Programs in developing nations that address the needs of the poor: Casa Materna, Fonkoze USA, Hearts in Motion, Hospice St. Joseph, Notre Dame India Mission, Sister Parish, Inc.

The challenge of Justice impels us to work for systemic change in society, governance, the market, and all systems that impact the people of the world.

Support for agencies that work for systemic change: We contribute a portion of our monthly tithe to support the work of creating a more just society.
The work of Faithful Citizenship calls us to legislative action at all levels of government, as guided by the Catholic Conference of Kentucky and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Our CLOUT (Citizens of Louisville Organized and United Together) membership enables us to work for justice in collaboration with other local congregations of faith.
Our active participation and support in a number of organizations enables us to carry out the mandates of Catholic Social Teaching: Appalachia Science for the Public Interest, Bread for the World, Community Farm Alliance, Jubilee USA.

The challenge of Peace calls us to radical peacemaking. We seek to live and nurture non-violence, so that peace will grow in our world and bless its peoples.

Support and action in “peacemaking agencies’: We have long-standing membership and a history of action with a number of organizations that work for non-violent solutions to conflict, including the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Guatemala Accompaniment Program, Guatemala Human Rights Commission, Institute for Peace and Justice, Kentucky Coalition Against the Death Penalty, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, KITLAC (Kentucky Interfaith Taskforce on Latin America and The Caribbean Network), Pax Christi, TASSC (Torture Abolition& Survivors Support Coalition), Witness for Peace.
