Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility, as it has been defined at Epiphany, represents this community's commitment to reach out to the larger world. The many ministries listed under Social Responsibility express the Gospel concern to love all persons, especially those who suffer from oppression, deprivation, or violence.

Greg Tichenor Honored

Greg TichenorThe 26th annual African American Catholic Leadership Awards Banquet paid homage to both its past and its future during the March 2, 2013 event at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel. The banquet, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry (OMM), presented its highest honor — the 2013 Acacia Award — to St. Joseph Society of the Sacred Heart Bishop John H. Ricard and to Church of the Epiphany parishioner Greg Tichenor.

The Acacia Award presented to Greg Tichenor speaks to the OMM’s continuing efforts to bridge racial, economic and social gaps between residents of the local community. Tichenor has been active in tutoring children at the Catholic Enrichment Center on West Broadway and has been a part of programs such as “Moving Toward Oneness,” “Crossing the Social Divide,” and “Undoing Racism.”

As we journey from Easter to Pentecost with the first Christians, we are drawn by our Scripture readings at Eucharist to reflect on the lived experience of the early Church, but not as historical exercise. Rather, we look to the first Beloved Community of disciples of Jesus, to gain insight into what it means to be the Beloved Community of Epiphany. What does our Teacher really ask of us? What is implied in all his words that are addressed directly to his first disciples, especially in his last conversation with them? (See Jesus’ last discourse, Gospel of John.) Perhaps these words are somehow directly related to the meaning of his Eucharistic action--saying, in effect, “this sharing of bread and cup is deeply connected to your love for one another, everything I am and everything I announce for this world depends on your love for one another.” He gives “a new commandment--you must love one another.” This is the highpoint of Jesus’ teaching, the final launch stage of his movement to redeem and restore “the world” to the original form of creation that God intended.
