Business
- Sr. Chris told us that New Ways Ministry (a gay and lesbian support church in the Catholic Church) will be having their 5th National Symposium here in Louisville on March 8-10, 2002. They have asked for an endorsement and financial support. Our committee agreed unanimously to endorse the symposium and will bring it to the PPC Executive Committee to see if the PPC would also like to endorse it.
- A request to have a St. Vincent dePaul Conference (or chapter) at Epiphany was brought to Sr. Chris by Joe Stuber. After much discussion, it was decided to keep our present support of St. Vincent dePaul (10%) and may increase our monetary support next fiscal year. Sr. Chris will respond to Joe in writing explaining that we felt it would duplicate the work of the EACM and that we did not feel there would be enough support for a Conference here at this time.
- Charlie Wardrip reported on the PPC retreat, held last weekend. It was facilitated by Lois Luckett and consisted of team-building exercises. Charlie feels this year's council will be a good one. He was approached by Jack Allen on the retreat, who asked how Adult Formation and the SRSC could work together on educational pursuits. Our committee agreed to have one of their committee come to our meetings and will send one of members to their meetings. Rosemary Smith will call Jack and will go to the first of their meetings.
- Charlie said he was approached by a new parishioner who had read about a refugee family from Afghanistan in the Record, wanting to know if we could help them in any way. He was going to approach our committee, but just found out that St. Pius parish has volunteered to be their sponsor. We will offer to help in any way we can.
- We have been asked to help with Epiphany's new web page by sending the minutes of our meeting and any other events we are sponsoring.
Agenda
- The James E. Flynn dinner will be held Saturday, November 10, 2001. There will probably be a Spanish mass prior to the dinner. Mark Chmiel, former Social Justice Minister at Epiphany will be the speaker and will hold a book signing for his new book about Elie Wiesel. Sr. Chris has received 2 nominations so far for the award. The winner will be selected at the next meeting. The dinner will be catered.
- The retreat for our committee will be held at Lake St. Joseph on October 5-6. A facilitator has not be selected. Recommended were Celeste Anderson, Lois Luckett and Shannon Queenan.
- We need a representative to serve on the Parish Grant Committee. This only requires 2 meetings. Applications for the grant are due November 1. Tom Ash is chair of the committee.
- The topic of church teachings on sexuality, an issue that began with our letter to the Boy Scouts of America, is being addressed. There is an ad hoc committee being formed to develop ways our parish can approach this issue. Also, Ken Ulrich, an elected member of the PPC has offered to help rewrite our letter to the Boy Scouts and Charlie has agreed to work with him.
- There will be a presentation on Haiti at the Dinner & Discussion on Monday, September 24. Charlie showed a video he has put together about Epiphany's recent trip there, which is very well done. There may be another group going to Haiti next year.
- Sr. Chris reported in Tom Wannemuehler's absence that there will be 10- 11 groups in the Building Bridges program on racism beginning the week of September 23.
Committee Reports
- Dotti Lockhart reported that the Latino Concerns committee is trying to make Hispanics feel more welcome at Epiphany. A new WELCOME sign is being made and bi-lingual lectors are being trained along with all other lectors.
- Libbey Smith invited all to the Respect Life Conference being held at Epiphany on September 22 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. She noted that there lots of other events being held that day that may hurt attendance at the conference.
- Suzanne Moseley, Environmental Concerns Committee, said that there will be a Blessing of Animals and a Plant Exchange on Sunday, September 30.
